How to Make A Snowball Earth
This is the rough draft of a tutorial describing " How to Make a Snowball Earth". It's pretty technical, but show much the Earth must cool to go from a "Super hothouse" typical of the late Precambrian to a full-blown Snowball Earth. One interesting discovery - The Earth probably had "dry ice" (frozen CO2) ice caps during Snow ball Earth. The removal of this important greenhouse gas certainly cooled the Earth further. - CRS Scotese 09/02/2022

Future Plate Tectonics: Pangea Proxima - Vignette 10
Просмотров 184 тыс.2 года назад
This speculative animation shows what the world might look like 250 million years in the future. The first 50 million years is a simple projection of current plate motions. After 75 million years changes in plate boundaries (e.g. collision of Africa with southern Europe and the subduction of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge beneath North and South America) result in a realignment of the forces that drive...
Plate Velocities - Vignette 09
Просмотров 16 тыс.2 года назад
This animation was produced by my colleague, Sabin Zahirovic at the University of Sydney using my Global Plate Model. It shows how the direction and speed of the plates has changed through time. Slow moving plates are in purple (less than 4 cm/yr). Plates moving at average velocities (4-8 cm/yr) are show in blue. Fast moving plates are shown in light blue & green (greater than 10 cm.yr). Plates...

First of all.....know your enemy. When you know the enemy, you eventually discover that Earth is not a spinning ball. An elegant guess is that those plates move because Earth has grown into an adult.

This is a great video. When it's played in reverse, then it's a bit easier to understand what the world was like back then. And thanks for the classical song in the background. Danse Macabre is one of our favourite classical music songs. So, this video is very fantastic. Keep up the good work.

Probably not. The entity we call "North America" was assembled much less than ten thousand years ago, out of four major pieces: the ONAC, the Fractured Craton holding the Colorado Plateau, an Accretionary Plate stretching from Siberia to Mexico, and the lower portion of the US, on a line below Tennessee's southern state line, except where the Appalachian Mountains intrude into northeastern Georgia and northeastern Alabama, plus the Gulf of Mexico, eastern Mexico, and the Yucatan Peninsula down to the "swirl" that comes off the Cayman Trench. I doubt anyone would recognize the Earth of only 200 Million years ago, including ALL of the "experts". There's a lot of "Six Blind Indian Fakirs Describing an Elephant to the Rajah" thinking demonstrated here. Just because you grasp the beast by its tail does NOT make it a "rope"! Earth has been subjected to titanic forces more than a few times, some of these well within the living memory of humans, despite geologists' best efforts to either cover the events up, or ignore them.
